Mel McMahon Stone is an entrepreneur, radio and television personality, and activist. Born and raised in Indianapolis, Mel started her career in broadcasting at the age of 19 as the receptionist at a local radio station and did everything but answer the phones. She is currently heard on 93.1 WIBC, Country 97.1 HANK FM, and B105.7 and often seen on WISH-TV8’s Indy Style and Fox59’s Morning News.
After the sudden death of her daughter, Ella, to SIDS in 2008, Mel became an advocate for infant loss survivors. She hosted the first “An Evening for Ella and Friends, An Infant Loss Memorial” in 2008 and has held it annually in conjunction with the March of Dimes ever since. Her nonprofit efforts also include helping First Candle, Indiana Mother’s Milk Bank, The Salvation Army, Families First, Westminster Neighborhood Services, Coburn Place, and many, many more.
Mel’s passion for volunteering eventually turned into a career. In 2010, she chose to pursue radio only part-time and became the Corporate Relations Coordinator for The Salvation Army and eventually became the Director of Major Gifts. While working there, she was honored as a member of the 2013 IBJ Forty Under 40 class, and discovered her passion for working with local business owners and helping their businesses grow. That passion soon became a business. In May of 2014, she and her husband, Lance launched their own company, Indiana Originals. Indiana Originals is a growing, statewide directory of locally owned and operated businesses headquartered in Indiana. The goal of Indiana Originals is to help customers with a local preference find truly local businesses for their everyday needs.
Currently, Mel is on the March of Dimes March for Babies planning committee and acts a consultant to several non-for-profits and small businesses. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Indiana University with a double major in Communications & Culture and Criminal Justice, with a minor in Telecommunications and a Masters in Public Administration from Keller Graduate School of Management. The best part of her day is any time she gets to be with her husband, Lance, and their one-year-old son.
In Mel’s words:
“I’m an absent minded, weirdly organized, always on the go Virgo that has quite a few Leo qualities. I loooove live music, remain extremely active in the community, and will be the first person to accompany you on the most random road trip. I am not that great at recognizing song lyrics, I’m unsure of the extent of my indecisiveness, and I keep putting off my procrastination issues. The quest for the most amazing mascara continues, I hope one day a soy chai latte is randomly delivered to my desk, and daisies will more than likely remain my favorite flower.
People always ask me when I sleep because I am always on the go, but you have to “make” time— never “not have” time. It’s amazing how much you can accomplish in one day when you wake up at 3:30 in the morning and DVRs may be the greatest invention ever. My motto is “be good or be good at it.” What’s yours?”
