Questions: Franklin Central High School Shooting Threat on Snapchat

Monday night we were made aware of a Snapchat threat made towards Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis, which from what we can gather, stemmed from a fight at the school earlier in the day.

We’ll preface this with most of the updates we saw were from individuals on Facebook, so take it with a grain of salt until it can be verified.

The Snapchat screenshot we saw stated, “If you go to franklin central high school don’t go tomorrow someone is shooting up the school”.

Statement From Franklin Central High School Principal

Here is the statement made on Facebook from Franklin Central High School principle Chase Huotari.

This evening we were made aware of a post made on social media directed at Franklin Central High School. The safety and security of our students is of the utmost importance. In conjunction with our school police department, we have investigated every lead and determined that this is not a credible threat.

It is unfortunate that someone has used social media to try and disrupt the educational process at Franklin Central. Our police department and administration will continue to investigate to determine who may be responsible for the post.

Again, the safety and security of our students is of the utmost importance. As a precautionary measure, there will be an increased police presence tomorrow.

Thanks,

Chase Huotari, Principal
Franklin Central High School

Questions and the Rumor Mill

Upon reading this it left us with an uneasy feeling and questions.

How was it determined that this wasn’t a credible threat?  You state that you’re trying to “determine who may be responsible for the post”, which insinuates that the sender is indeed unknown.

Do you know where it may have come from? Was it real? We don’t need names or details, just general information to put everyone’s minds at ease. Not offering this gets the rumor mill turning fast, which isn’t helpful for anyone. The amount of conflicting information and outright speculation that we saw was/is beyond absurd. Just the facts, please.

At first glance, it did seem like the investigation was completed quickly, which we saw many comments on, but the truth of the matter is that they said it was an ongoing investigation and that they didn’t deem it a credible threat. Fair enough, but that’s still enough uncertainty to not put one’s mind at ease. As the leader, you need to assure everyone that everything is fine, but people are going to question a vague response, especially given the fact that there was a school shooting in central Indiana a mere three months ago.

And finally, did the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) get involved in this investigation? Every mention specifies the school police, not the local police department.

School police are nice for normal situations, but you really need someone with more authority in this sort of situation. One would assume that school police are limited in what they can actually do on a legal level, however, we are unable to find any information on the Franklin Township Community School Corp. website regarding their police department to verify what level of authority that they do have.

Bottom line, keep the children as safe as possible and don’t make it appear that potential threats are just being dismissed, even when we all know better than that. The mind is a funny thing and will question every move you make and every word you use in such a situation detrimental to our survival and our children’s survival when the “fight or flight” responses kick in.

IMPD on the Scene

Circling back to IMPD, yes, we heard that they were indeed aware of the situation and that they were indeed at Franklin Central High School patrolling this morning along with the school police department.

However, we have not yet seen a public statement as to the extent of either department’s involvement.  But we would assume that if anything substantial is revealed, we will hear about it.

He Started Singing Along… #AdventureswithBabyB

b in poolToday may have been the cutest swimming lesson EVER at Goldfish Swim School. #BabyB sang along with all the songs out loud today! It was adorable.  He still isn’t talking much, but I’m pretty sure that’s just by choice. He jibber-jabbers constantly, but then out of nowhere, he says a complete sentence crystal clear.  He has been “singing along” with other songs for a while now, but today was the first time he sang in the pool. He has been in swimming lessons since November, so I was super proud of this accomplishment today!

#BabyB loves the water. We put him in swimming lessons to keep him safe, but he is also having fun and learning great social skills. Unfortunately, he still hasn’t learned how to not put every single toy in his mouth, so if you have any suggestions for that, let me know!

turtleGoldfish Swim School swimming lessons are just plain fun! #BabyB loves the water, he has a great time with the other kids in his class, he loves watching the fish and the turtle before class, he sometimes joins the other kids at the
coloring table, and he loves the bright colors and fun toys.  He might not know he is learning important survival skills, but I do.

Are you considering taking your kid to Goldfish Swim Schools? Goldfish Swim Schools specializes in teaching safety skills for kids from four months to 12-years-old and we practice these safety skills each week. For more information on lessons, visit the Goldfish Swim School Carmel website.

Kylie is Back… #AdventureswithBabyB

I wish I could have caught #BabyB’s excitement on camera when he saw his teacher Kylie! If you missed the blog about how much he loves his teacher, click here.   Kylie was out two weeks with the flu and was on spring break, so #BabyB missed her.  Fortunately, Goldfish Swim School is always prepared with substitute teachers, so we never had to miss a lesson.

When #BabyB saw Kylie through the observation wall, he was so overjoyed. bummed he can't see kylie He wasn’t too happy though when he realized he couldn’t get in the pool! Don’t worry. He didn’t have to wait long. His class was starting shortly after we arrived.

Swim classes are only a half-an-hour long which is plenty of time to play, learn, and have fun. With a 90 degree heated pool, you don’t waste any of your lesson trying to warm up!  The super fun part of today’s lesson was the new fish toy.  Part of the lesson includes swimming across the pool after a duck or ball (motivation).  Well, today, we had a new toy–a goldfish!  #BabyB did not want to give his up!

kylieEven if you go to the same class every week, every lesson is different. You learn the same important water safety skills, but you use different songs and change the order of the activities. A special activity such as a boat ride, slide ride, water raft, or something like that is included. The kids always provide great entertainment, too!

Interested in putting your kid in swimming lessons? Sign up today! With perpetual lessons, you don’t have to wait for a new session to start. For more information, visit the Goldfish Swim School Carmel website.

You Say it’s Your Birthday… #AdventuresWithBabyB

So what better way to spend your birthday than in your favorite place… The pool!

We thought about rescheduling his lesson for today, but #BabyB loves the pool so much, I thought having him at one of his favorite places would be best. Boy, was I right! Being the pool is exactly where he wanted to be.

As a special birthday treat, #BabyB received a postcard in the mail from Goldfish Swim School wishing him a happy birthday and letting him pick out a special treat from the snack area. He also received a ribbon congratulating him on swimming on his birthday. He was super stoked.

Another Monumental Moment at Goldfish Swim School… #AdventuresWithBabyB

IMG_4506So, this may seem like no big deal if you are not a parent, but if you have been taking your son to Goldfish Swim School since November and this is the FIRST TIME it’s happened, it’s monumental… #BabyB climbed out of the pool as directed (elbow, elbow, tummy, knee!) and ACTUALLY SAT DOWN!!! HE DIDN’T RUN OFF!!!  THIS IS HUGE!!!

Seriously, this is a really big deal. Before (and I mean every single class), #BabyB would climb out of the pool and get up and run off for a toy.  I would have to jump out after him or my husband or my mom would have to wrangle him.  If I was embarrassed easily, that would have embarrassed me. I usually laughed it off, but I was still frustrated that he was getting IMG_4483distracted and not following directions.  After reminding myself that he is not even two yet, I usually felt better and we would move on with our song and jump back in the pool.  One thing I did do purposefully, though, is switch up our place on the wall. Yes, I purposefully moved #BabyB to the
IMG_4495
end of the line AWAY from the toys.  This definitely helped him focus and stick with the activities at hand.

I am just beaming with pride at the progress this little man has made since he started at Goldfish Swim School Carmel in November.  He was never scared of the water, and honestly, that is what prompted me to get him into lessons.  I want him to learn water safety. I don’t want him to be afraid of the water and I want him to learn how to take care of himself around water.  For not even being two yet, he is making wonderful progress.  He blows bubbles, he goes under water, he kicks, he paddles, and he is willing to try new activities.  I call that a win!IMG_4522

Each week we practice safety skills in a HEATED pool.  We splash, we sing songs, we gain confidence, and we get to spend quality time together.  Our half hour a week in the pool is pretty special.  Interested in learning more?  Visit the Goldfish Swim School website.
