Let’s Talk About the Locks… #AdventureswithBabyB

It is hard to find something to NOT like about Goldfish Swim School Carmel. I mean, seriously, a heated pool, showers with free baby soap, a heated pool… Yes, I like the heated pool because I have to get in with #BabyB.  I did find one thing that can be improved though–the changing room locks.

changing roomLet me clarify, nothing is actually wrong. The changing rooms are spacious enough to get in and get out quickly. Unfortunately, I have an almost two-year-old that is three feet tall and learned that if he pulls the handle down the lock pops and he can open the door. I’m not so worried about him opening the door and taking off. He can’t really get that far.  What he can do though is expose his naked mama to everyone in the viewing gallery! Oops!  Sorry about that, Goldfish.

Don’t worry, it wasn’t that bad. I did make me change up my strategy for getting us out of the changing room a little faster though. The key is to get yourself changed first while the baby is wrapped up in their towel nice and cosy. Then change the baby once you are dressed so if he runs off you can run after him!

Goldfish Swim School has been great for getting #BabyB ready for the swimming season. They could be great for your kid, too.  Not only do they have swimming lessons, but they have special programs, too.  Check those out here.

Grandma Comes to Swimming Lessons… #AdventureswithBabyB

swimming with grandmaToday was a super fun day at swimming lessons because #BabyB got to show off to Grandma! One of the many cool features of Goldfish Swim School Carmel is the observation set up. Not only is the observation area the entire length of the pool, but if you are with a baby (or toddler), you can actually sit on the deck near the side of the pool to watch. This is pretty exciting for visitors and it is pretty good motivation for #BabyB to show off his skills.

Event though #BabyB has the same teacher, he has the opportunity to make new friends during this new class time.  He has adjusted pretty well and is mostly concerned with getting me soaking wet.  He is definitely better at floating, he has no concerns with going under water, and he even climbed up the slide himself (when he wasn’t supposed to).  It is hard to believe he has only been in classes since November!

Curious about what a Goldfish Swim School looks like?  Give yourself a tour here!

Thanks for this opportunity, Goldfish! #melforgoldfish

New Class Time, New Experience at Goldfish #AdventureswithBabyB

IMG_4506When #BabyB first started taking swim lessons at Goldfish Swim School Carmel, we had him in a 7:00 p.m. class thinking it would wear him out and he would be ready for bed when we got home. Boy, was I wrong! Even after showering, putting on pajamas, and a smooth car ride home, that boy found a second wind and was up for another few hours.  With the mantra for 2017 being #simplify, it was time to make a change.

In an effort to #simplify our schedules and create more of a balance to our crazy work/home life, we adjusted #BabyB’s childcare schedule.  I now pick him up in Carmel every day at 3:30.  Well, since we are already in Carmel, doesn’t it make sense to just go swimming lessons from school and then go home for dinner?  It sounded like a good plan… Luckily it worked great!

No more rushing home to cook dinner, then racing back to Carmel, then losing the rest of the evening.  No more waiting in line for changing rooms, either! So far so good.  The beauty of this schedule change is how simple it was to make. I just spoke with Brooke and Andrew at the front desk, we looked for some open classes with the same teacher, found a good time, and were all set.  With perpetual lessons, the class schedules are flexible.  Here is more information about perpetual lessons:

  1. Perpetual Lessons also provide a more affordable option for members to pay for swim lessons. Monthly lesson payments eliminate patrons having to come up with such a large sum of money at the beginning of each session.
  2. Perpetual lessons provide clients with a consistent day and time until they choose to make a change. We don’t rearrange our schedule every 3 months which provides a more consistent swim lesson experience for both the students and parents.

We can’t wait until next week! We are so thankful for this opportunity.  Thanks, Goldfish!

Another Monumental Moment at Goldfish Swim School… #AdventuresWithBabyB

IMG_4506So, this may seem like no big deal if you are not a parent, but if you have been taking your son to Goldfish Swim School since November and this is the FIRST TIME it’s happened, it’s monumental… #BabyB climbed out of the pool as directed (elbow, elbow, tummy, knee!) and ACTUALLY SAT DOWN!!! HE DIDN’T RUN OFF!!!  THIS IS HUGE!!!

Seriously, this is a really big deal. Before (and I mean every single class), #BabyB would climb out of the pool and get up and run off for a toy.  I would have to jump out after him or my husband or my mom would have to wrangle him.  If I was embarrassed easily, that would have embarrassed me. I usually laughed it off, but I was still frustrated that he was getting IMG_4483distracted and not following directions.  After reminding myself that he is not even two yet, I usually felt better and we would move on with our song and jump back in the pool.  One thing I did do purposefully, though, is switch up our place on the wall. Yes, I purposefully moved #BabyB to the
IMG_4495
end of the line AWAY from the toys.  This definitely helped him focus and stick with the activities at hand.

I am just beaming with pride at the progress this little man has made since he started at Goldfish Swim School Carmel in November.  He was never scared of the water, and honestly, that is what prompted me to get him into lessons.  I want him to learn water safety. I don’t want him to be afraid of the water and I want him to learn how to take care of himself around water.  For not even being two yet, he is making wonderful progress.  He blows bubbles, he goes under water, he kicks, he paddles, and he is willing to try new activities.  I call that a win!IMG_4522

Each week we practice safety skills in a HEATED pool.  We splash, we sing songs, we gain confidence, and we get to spend quality time together.  Our half hour a week in the pool is pretty special.  Interested in learning more?  Visit the Goldfish Swim School website.

#BabyB Might be in Love with his Teacher… #AdventureswithBabyB

IMG_3470So I’m pretty sure #BabyB has a crush on his teacher.  He is so excited when he sees her, he loves to show off, and he loves when he puts a smile on her face.  I thought I would introduce you to her.  Meet #BabyB’s teacher from Goldfish Swim School Carmel!

Name: Kylie

How long have you been a swim instructor? I’ve been a swim instructor since February of 2016, so my one year is very soon!

What made you want to be a swim instructor? I wanted to become a swim instructor because I love little kids and I love swimming so what’s better than teaching little cute kids how to swim!!

What do you enjoy most about teaching swim lessons? What I enjoy the most about teaching swim lessons is how happy the kids are just to come to Goldfish and then when they accomplish something new or good it just warms my heart to see how happy the kid and their parents are for their IMG_3969accomplishment.

What puts a smile on your face during a lesson? My kids in my classes continuously put smiles on my face whether if it is from something funny that they said, how much they are improving or how cute they are!

Kylie is so good with #BabyB and the other little ones in his class. She is always enthusiastic, attentive, and helpful. Thanks for making swim class fun, Kylie!

Thankful for makeup classes… #AdventureswithBabyB

IMG_4187make it workEvery Tuesday night is swim lesson night. The evening is pretty routine.  Get home by five p.m., pack the swim bag, eat dinner, load up the car, then arrive at Goldfish Swim School in Carmel.  Well, tonight it didn’t work out that way.  I was in a minor car accident leaving a downtown parking garage this afternoon.  Getting in a wreck on Illinois St just north of Washington St just before rush hour pretty threw off the whole night.

I arrived home late, and I really didn’t know how I would get #BabyB fed and to swim lessons on time without going crazy.  The truth is, we don’t need to put so much pressure on ourselves to get everything done. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out, and that’s okay.  That’s also where make-up lessons come in handy!

It was so easy to find another lesson for #BabyB to attend this week. I just called the school, let them know what happened, and Brooke (the staff member that answered the phone) helped me find an open class that worked with our schedule.  It’s a bummer that #BabyB had to miss class tonight, but at the same time, he isn’t even two yet, so he is easily redirected.

We’ll try again tomorrow!

Earplugs Make all the Difference… #AdventuresWithBabyB

IMG_4180The first few weeks of swimming lessons at Goldfish Swim School were fun, but tough.  #BabyB was battling multiple ear infections over several weeks. It was hard for him to focus on anything let along swimming lessons.  Well, instead of cancelling swim lessons (as suggested by many concerned individuals), we bought some ear plugs.  Guess what?  #BabyB hasn’t had an ear infection since! We’re not saying the only reason he had ear infections was because of the pool, but my point is that I am not going to take something away from my kid (especially something that could be life saving) without trying out some other options first.

#BabyB’s awesome and super fun teacher (Kylie) and I had a convo last class IMG_4169that just made so much sense. When we first started lessons, #BabyB was getting used to the water, the class, and the people, so naturally, he had a learning curve to overcome.  However, it wasn’t until after we started using ear plugs that he really started participating. Imagine wanting to go underwater, jump in the pool, or float on your back but you hesitate because you know it will hurt your ears.  How awful!  Earplugs made all the difference. We have to get his attention a little more purposefully now (I’m convinced he can’t hear anything!), but he gets to enjoy the water, have fun, and learn at the same time. It’s totally worth it.

Interested in registering your child for swimming lessons at Goldfish Swim Schools? Here is some more information from their FAQ page:

Q: How do I register for lessons?

  1. Choose your child’s level (See level descriptions under swim lessons). If you are unsure of what level to sign up for, our sales staff will be happy to help with the placement of your child.
  2. Decide how many classes you would like to take per week. The monthly cost is based on your child taking one class per week. Your child will receive a multiple class discount (7% per class) if you choose to take 2+ classes per week. (Group lessons only)
  3. Call or stop by Carmel and we will register your child for lessons.
  4. Reserve your class spot with a credit card, debit card or checking/savings account.
  5. Lastly, remember to show up 15 minutes prior to your child’s first lesson. At that time, we will have you fill out our Swim Lesson Registration Form to finalize your booking. As a reminder, your child will not be able to swim until this form has been completed and turned into Carmel.
  6. You may also register online for lessons, however, not all of our locations offer online registration, so please check the specific location page to see if that option is offered.

The Show Off… #AdventuresWithBabyB

Baking before class with Grandma!

This week was a big one for swim lessons.  Grandma and Grandpa came to watch!  It is so nice to be able to have family enjoy #BabyB’s swim lessons, too.  The observation area spans the entire pool so no matter which lane your kid is in, you can see what they are doing.

Watching #BabyB tonight, you would have thought he was a swimming pro! He went underwater without hesitation, he kicked almost the entire length of the pool, he reached out those arms like his life depended on it… It was impressive.  I have to be honest, I was kind of surprised at how well he was doing.  Then it hit me… It might not be because Grandma and Grandpa are watching. It may be because of the new little girl that joined the class tonight. 😉IMG_0456

Another plus to swimming lessons at Goldfish Swim Schools is the schedule. Since they have year around lessons, you don’t have to wait for a session to begin to get your kid in the pool.  Goldfish Swim Schools focuses on a “Perpetual Lesson Schedule.” Here is a little more information from their FAQ page:

Q: Why do you promote perpetual, year round, swim lessons at your facility?

We promote and believe in year round swim lessons because children learn to swim and be safe in the water at a much faster pace with consistent year-round swim lessons. Our goal is to eliminate the mentality of seasonal swim    lessons because this approach usually leads to the loss of gained swim skills resulting in wasted time and money.

  1. Perpetual Lessons also provide a more affordable option for customers to pay for swim lessons.
