b in goldfish t shirt

Let’s go! Join me at Goldfish Swim School!

Four Indianapolis-area Make-A-Wish® Wish Kids are being honored for their courage and strength with fundraiser celebrations at two Goldfish Swim School locations in greater Indianapolis. These special events for the kids, their families, and close friends will take place on Saturday, June 3 and Saturday, June 10.

Goldfish Swim School is also raising funds with Make-a-Wish Fish that are available for purchase at the Goldfish Swim School locations in Carmel and Fishers and will help Make-a-Wish grant more wishes to area kids battling life-threatening medical conditions.

Indianapolis native Lilliana will be celebrated at the June 3 event at Goldfish Swim School –Carmel. Lilliana suffers from Trisomy 18 – a rare condition that causes severe developmental delays due to an extra chromosome 18. Lilliana’s wish is to go on a Disney Cruise where she can enjoy the things she loves most – lights and sounds, balloons and sweets.

Mikhail will be celebrated at the June 10 event at Goldfish Swim School – Fishers. Mikhail suffers from Sickle Cell Disease, which causes red blood cells to become misshapen and break down. His wish is to go to Disney World where he can spend time on the beach with his family.

He Started Singing Along… #AdventureswithBabyB

b in poolToday may have been the cutest swimming lesson EVER at Goldfish Swim School. #BabyB sang along with all the songs out loud today! It was adorable.  He still isn’t talking much, but I’m pretty sure that’s just by choice. He jibber-jabbers constantly, but then out of nowhere, he says a complete sentence crystal clear.  He has been “singing along” with other songs for a while now, but today was the first time he sang in the pool. He has been in swimming lessons since November, so I was super proud of this accomplishment today!

#BabyB loves the water. We put him in swimming lessons to keep him safe, but he is also having fun and learning great social skills. Unfortunately, he still hasn’t learned how to not put every single toy in his mouth, so if you have any suggestions for that, let me know!

turtleGoldfish Swim School swimming lessons are just plain fun! #BabyB loves the water, he has a great time with the other kids in his class, he loves watching the fish and the turtle before class, he sometimes joins the other kids at the
coloring table, and he loves the bright colors and fun toys.  He might not know he is learning important survival skills, but I do.

Are you considering taking your kid to Goldfish Swim Schools? Goldfish Swim Schools specializes in teaching safety skills for kids from four months to 12-years-old and we practice these safety skills each week. For more information on lessons, visit the Goldfish Swim School Carmel website.

Kylie is Back… #AdventureswithBabyB

I wish I could have caught #BabyB’s excitement on camera when he saw his teacher Kylie! If you missed the blog about how much he loves his teacher, click here.   Kylie was out two weeks with the flu and was on spring break, so #BabyB missed her.  Fortunately, Goldfish Swim School is always prepared with substitute teachers, so we never had to miss a lesson.

When #BabyB saw Kylie through the observation wall, he was so overjoyed. bummed he can't see kylie He wasn’t too happy though when he realized he couldn’t get in the pool! Don’t worry. He didn’t have to wait long. His class was starting shortly after we arrived.

Swim classes are only a half-an-hour long which is plenty of time to play, learn, and have fun. With a 90 degree heated pool, you don’t waste any of your lesson trying to warm up!  The super fun part of today’s lesson was the new fish toy.  Part of the lesson includes swimming across the pool after a duck or ball (motivation).  Well, today, we had a new toy–a goldfish!  #BabyB did not want to give his up!

kylieEven if you go to the same class every week, every lesson is different. You learn the same important water safety skills, but you use different songs and change the order of the activities. A special activity such as a boat ride, slide ride, water raft, or something like that is included. The kids always provide great entertainment, too!

Let’s Talk About the Locks… #AdventureswithBabyB

It is hard to find something to NOT like about Goldfish Swim School Carmel. I mean, seriously, a heated pool, showers with free baby soap, a heated pool… Yes, I like the heated pool because I have to get in with #BabyB.  I did find one thing that can be improved though–the changing room locks.

changing roomLet me clarify, nothing is actually wrong. The changing rooms are spacious enough to get in and get out quickly. Unfortunately, I have an almost two-year-old that is three feet tall and learned that if he pulls the handle down the lock pops and he can open the door. I’m not so worried about him opening the door and taking off. He can’t really get that far.  What he can do though is expose his naked mama to everyone in the viewing gallery! Oops!  Sorry about that, Goldfish.

Don’t worry, it wasn’t that bad. I did make me change up my strategy for getting us out of the changing room a little faster though. The key is to get yourself changed first while the baby is wrapped up in their towel nice and cosy. Then change the baby once you are dressed so if he runs off you can run after him!

Goldfish Swim School has been great for getting #BabyB ready for the swimming season. They could be great for your kid, too.  Not only do they have swimming lessons, but they have special programs, too.  Check those out here.

Grandma Comes to Swimming Lessons… #AdventureswithBabyB

swimming with grandmaToday was a super fun day at swimming lessons because #BabyB got to show off to Grandma! One of the many cool features of Goldfish Swim School Carmel is the observation set up. Not only is the observation area the entire length of the pool, but if you are with a baby (or toddler), you can actually sit on the deck near the side of the pool to watch. This is pretty exciting for visitors and it is pretty good motivation for #BabyB to show off his skills.

Event though #BabyB has the same teacher, he has the opportunity to make new friends during this new class time.  He has adjusted pretty well and is mostly concerned with getting me soaking wet.  He is definitely better at floating, he has no concerns with going under water, and he even climbed up the slide himself (when he wasn’t supposed to).  It is hard to believe he has only been in classes since November!

Curious about what a Goldfish Swim School looks like?  Give yourself a tour here!

Thanks for this opportunity, Goldfish! #melforgoldfish

New Class Time, New Experience at Goldfish #AdventureswithBabyB

IMG_4506When #BabyB first started taking swim lessons at Goldfish Swim School Carmel, we had him in a 7:00 p.m. class thinking it would wear him out and he would be ready for bed when we got home. Boy, was I wrong! Even after showering, putting on pajamas, and a smooth car ride home, that boy found a second wind and was up for another few hours.  With the mantra for 2017 being #simplify, it was time to make a change.

In an effort to #simplify our schedules and create more of a balance to our crazy work/home life, we adjusted #BabyB’s childcare schedule.  I now pick him up in Carmel every day at 3:30.  Well, since we are already in Carmel, doesn’t it make sense to just go swimming lessons from school and then go home for dinner?  It sounded like a good plan… Luckily it worked great!

No more rushing home to cook dinner, then racing back to Carmel, then losing the rest of the evening.  No more waiting in line for changing rooms, either! So far so good.  The beauty of this schedule change is how simple it was to make. I just spoke with Brooke and Andrew at the front desk, we looked for some open classes with the same teacher, found a good time, and were all set.  With perpetual lessons, the class schedules are flexible.  Here is more information about perpetual lessons:

  1. Perpetual Lessons also provide a more affordable option for members to pay for swim lessons. Monthly lesson payments eliminate patrons having to come up with such a large sum of money at the beginning of each session.
  2. Perpetual lessons provide clients with a consistent day and time until they choose to make a change. We don’t rearrange our schedule every 3 months which provides a more consistent swim lesson experience for both the students and parents.

We can’t wait until next week! We are so thankful for this opportunity.  Thanks, Goldfish!

The #MomFail… #AdventuresWithBabyB

#MomFail

It’s only Tuesday, and I knew I was pushing it.  Sometimes you just know you are going to have a crazy week and you should probably minimize your commitments, but do you do it? No! Why would you do that?!?! You are super mom!  Well, this time, I accomplished a super #momfail.

b and daniel tiger

When all else fails, let him watch Daniel Tiger.

Originally, I was supposed to be on IndyStyle Friday of this week.  Well, I messed up my schedule (doubled booked like always), and, fortunately, we were able to move the spot to Wednesday.  I messaged all my Indiana Originals members, items were being delivered, and everything was smooth sailing.  I had one member that I wanted to feature whose item wasn’t ready yet, but I promised to try my best to swing by and pick it up.  This plan works out great when your minutes have more than 60 seconds in them.  For some reason, I think NO MATTER WHAT, I can get it all done.

Since #BabyB has swimming lessons in Carmel at Goldfish Swim School, I figured we would pack up, get the kid in the car, drive to Redemption Alewerks for dinner, pick up the growler, get to swimming lessons, then get home and put the kid to bed so I can work more.  It was actually a well thought out plan and worked out great! We even made it to swimming lessons ON TIME!  Then it hit me…  Lance didn’t remember putting the swim bag in the back of the car… I didn’t remember putting the swim bag in the car…  We know #BabyB didn’t put the swim bag in the car… WE FORGOT THE SWIM BAG!!!  All that rushing and planning and success only to have a substantial #momfail of forgetting the swim bag.  Oh, well.  I just went inside, told Brooke about my mess up, and went home.  You can only do so much, right?  Let the guilt go, and try again next week.

The Show Off… #AdventuresWithBabyB

Baking before class with Grandma!

This week was a big one for swim lessons.  Grandma and Grandpa came to watch!  It is so nice to be able to have family enjoy #BabyB’s swim lessons, too.  The observation area spans the entire pool so no matter which lane your kid is in, you can see what they are doing.

Watching #BabyB tonight, you would have thought he was a swimming pro! He went underwater without hesitation, he kicked almost the entire length of the pool, he reached out those arms like his life depended on it… It was impressive.  I have to be honest, I was kind of surprised at how well he was doing.  Then it hit me… It might not be because Grandma and Grandpa are watching. It may be because of the new little girl that joined the class tonight. 😉IMG_0456

Another plus to swimming lessons at Goldfish Swim Schools is the schedule. Since they have year around lessons, you don’t have to wait for a session to begin to get your kid in the pool.  Goldfish Swim Schools focuses on a “Perpetual Lesson Schedule.” Here is a little more information from their FAQ page:

Q: Why do you promote perpetual, year round, swim lessons at your facility?

We promote and believe in year round swim lessons because children learn to swim and be safe in the water at a much faster pace with consistent year-round swim lessons. Our goal is to eliminate the mentality of seasonal swim    lessons because this approach usually leads to the loss of gained swim skills resulting in wasted time and money.

  1. Perpetual Lessons also provide a more affordable option for customers to pay for swim lessons.

Just Keep Swimming… Just Keep Swimming… #BabyB

img_3607

B loves the aquarium

In the words of Dory, “Just keep swimming!” That was my mantra at #BabyB’s swim lesson this week. Even in the water, my 31 pound one-year-old gets heavy! That’s when it hit me–I am getting exercise, too! I have lost 90 pounds since he was born 4/4/2015 and I have no plans on stopping any time soon!  The swim lessons for #BabyB and the importance of water safety are obviously the main goal here, but me getting exercise and having fun is a total bonus!

Tonight’s swim lessons went much smoother than last time from a mom’s perspective. We had to miss last week because of #BabyB’s ear infection, and he sure was ready to go tonight! We arrived quite early, so I was happy to see some built in entertainment for him. He would go back and forth between the table with the coloring books and the aquariums. He was quite mesmerized by the turtle!

img_3636

I underestimated the workout I was getting!

Once again the staff was very friendly and helpful. The teacher gave clear instructions and #BabyB only got out of the pool twice when we wasn’t supposed to (that’s an improvement)! For the most part though, I feel like class was much smoother for some pretty good reasons, so I thought I would share those here.  Have some swim lesson tips? Feel free to share those below! Also, below the tips, don’t forget to register for the holiday package!

Mel’s Swim Lesson Tips:

  • If you are getting in the water with the baby, wear your suit to your lesson. It’s so much easier just to take off your sweat pants and shirt and not worry about the baby running out of the changing room.
  • Don’t bring the entire diaper bag. Leave that in the car.  At your first lesson, you will receive a cute little swim bag.  Pack the swimsuit, towel, pajamas (if you have evening classes like us), baby lotion, and sippy cup. You really don’t need any more than that while you are in the building. The cubbies are there for convenient storage while you are in class, too.
  • If you have evening classes, give the kid a quick shower on the deck so you can lotion him and put pajamas on. If you are lucky enough to have a kid that falls asleep in the car, bedtime is a breeze.
  • Even if it is cold, make sure you have flip flops to walk around on the deck.
  • Become familiar with which changing rooms are bigger. Sometimes the extra space can cut down on the time needed in the actual room.
  • Don’t forget to pack a bra–it’s a little awkward without it when you change afterwards.

#BabyB Takes a Dip… The first day of swimming lessons!

img_3464So I knew #BabyB would be excited when he realized he was going swimming, but I didn’t realize just how excited! As soon as we walked in the
door and he saw a pool he could barely contain himself! Luckily, the staff was attentive and super helpful, so we didn’t have to wait too long to get to the fun of swimming. After filling out some paper work and learning the super simple check in process, we grabbed a pair of reusable swim trucks off the rack, got dressed, and got in line. Then #BabyB cut the line.  He moved right to the front and patiently waited for someone to open the door for him. Boy, was he ready to go!

When we got settled in the end of the pool for the baby/parent lessons, I img_3467was so relieved to feel the warm water—90 degree water! When I taught swimming lessons, I swear we spent at least the first 10 minutes warming up.  It was surprisingly relaxing even though we were there for lessons.  #BabyB has never had formal lessons, but he has always been drawn to water, so I knew he would do well. I also know that it is important for him to learn how to swim since he is such a water magnet.  Our family enjoys going to the lake and our friend has a pool, so the sooner he can learn water safety, the better.

Overall, #BabyB did pretty well.  The teachers were really good about explaining each activity and the parents were good about telling me what we were doing next when #BabyB tried to swim on his own, or get out and dump out all the balls, or splash water in my face…  I must say though, I was pretty proud when he put his head under water all by himself and even jumped off the water mat! Thirty minutes goes pretty quick! I wish we could have stayed in the pool longer! In that 30 minutes though my son gained more self-confidence, learned that he can kick and paddle at the same time, and also learned that he is big enough to stand on the side ledge with his head above water when his classmates still have to be held. I learned that I can be a part of him not only learning to swim, but learning to stay safe.

img_3469Bonus to Goldfish Swim School: the showers had baby shampoo already out, so I was easily able to get him washed up and in pajamas for the car ride home.  Having the late lesson helps not mess up the bedtime routine because he was pretty worn out when we got home.  I can’t wait to see what he gets to learn next week!
